Appalachian Approach Trail to Springer Mountain
Date TBD • Amicalola Falls State Park, Dawsonville, GA, Georgia
The official beginning of the Appalachian Trail. This out-and-back starts at Amicalola Falls State Park and climbs the blue-blazed Approach Trail past the staircase at Georgia's tallest waterfall, over the summits of Amicalola, Black, and Frosty mountains, to the bronze plaque and white-blaze start of the AT on Springer Mountain. It's a serious full-day effort with more than 4,000 feet of climbing — and a bucket-list one. Campsites along the way make it a great overnight for those who want to break it up.
Trail Notes
- Difficulty: Hard · 4,137 ft elevation gain · about 9–10 hours out-and-back
- What hikers say: stunning views and a rewarding climb on well-maintained trail; the steep staircase at the falls and the heat on the return are the main challenges.
- Good to know: a park entry fee is required. Hikers recommend an early start and plenty of water.
