"Knowing your place in the wild is the difference between being on a hike and being lost." — Unknown
Navigation is a life-saving skill. It's not something you use every weekend — but the one time you need it and don't have it, it matters more than anything else in your pack. This course exists because a group that goes deep into the woods together needs to know how to find their way out.
Our instructor, Dakota of The Woods (@offthecouch1999) Who is a survival instructor and a volunteer firefighter, drove in from Alabama specifically for Muslim Adventures. The average price for a basics navigation course is close to $200. We're offering it for $12 — all of which goes directly to the instructor.
Why Navigation Matters
Most people heading outdoors today rely entirely on GPS and phone apps. That's fine until it isn't — dead battery, no signal, cracked screen, or simply being in an area the map doesn't cover well. When that happens, the people who know how to read terrain and use a compass are the ones who get everyone home.
Knowing where you are and how to navigate is foundational. This course gives you that foundation.
What You'll Learn
The 3-hour course covers:
- How to read and understand a topographical map
- How to associate what's on the map with the terrain around you
- How a compass works and how to hold it correctly
- How to account for magnetic declination
- How to plot points on a map and create a route of travel
- How to shoot an azimuth, count your pace, and navigate around obstacles
- How to navigate when you don't have a map, compass, or either one
- Why you should never rely exclusively on GPS
- A short field hike to practice what you learned (no more than 2 miles)
Course Details
- Fee: $12 per person — goes directly to the instructor
- Capacity: 15–20 attendees max
- Duration: 3 hours class + short hike and skill test
- Arrival: 8:30 AM — early is on time, on time is late
What to Bring
- Notebook and pen or pencil — navigation takes practice, you will want notes
- Water — temps in the 80s, we'll be moving. Hydrate the night before, but don't over-hydrate right before class (hyponatremia is real)
- Snacks — light snack for the trail portion
- A bag — carry your items, don't hike with things in your hands
- Dress for a hike — training is outdoors in the woods
- Compass — if you already own one, bring it. If not, the team has custom maps and compasses available. Don't buy an expensive one before class — the instructor will guide you on the right one to get after the session
If you have any medical needs, please find a team leader before we start.
Recommended Apps
These are apps worth having on your phone for backcountry navigation:
- AllTrails — alltrails.com
- CalTopo — caltopo.com — the most detailed mapping tool available
- onX Backcountry — onxmaps.com
Get comfortable with at least one before you need it in the field.
Custom Maps & Compass
Maps for the training were custom-designed by the instructor specifically for this course.
If you want to purchase a compass, the instructor recommends:
- Suunto MC-2 — suunto.com — the instructor's personal compass
- Suunto A-30 (Metric) — suunto.com — the one used during training
Note: If you buy an imperial compass, brush up on metric — calculations in the field often need to be done in the universal metric system.
After the Course
After the class, the group may head to Grayson Coffee House — a Palestinian-owned spot nearby — for coffee and to support a Muslim-owned business. You're welcome to join.
