Toccoa Falls
Sunday, October 26, 2025 • Toccoa Falls College, Toccoa, GA, Georgia
About This Trip
Toccoa Falls sits on the campus of Toccoa Falls College in the northeast Georgia mountains — and at 186 feet, it's one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls east of the Mississippi. The walk from the entrance to the base of the falls is short and easy, but the payoff is massive.
This was a solid October outing. Cool air, the trees just starting to turn, and an absolutely stunning waterfall that most people in Georgia have never seen. Not every Muslim Adventures trip has to be a suffer-fest — sometimes you find something beautiful and you just go be present with it.
The Falls
- Height: 186 feet — taller than Niagara Falls
- Type: Free-falling plunge falls into a natural amphitheatre
- Walk to falls: About 0.3 miles from the entrance gate
- Terrain: Mostly flat path, easy enough for all fitness levels
- Admission: Small entrance fee to access the campus trail
The waterfall sits inside a natural bowl carved from the granite hillside. The sound alone is worth the trip — standing at the base, you feel the mist and hear nothing but rushing water.
History
In September 1977, a dam upstream failed after days of heavy rain, releasing over 170 million gallons of water down onto the falls and into the small town below. Thirty-nine people lost their lives. The waterfall and the campus community rebuilt.
Standing at the base of the falls, knowing that history adds a layer to the visit that photographs can't capture.
What to Bring
- Comfortable shoes — the path is easy but you'll want to walk around the base
