Blood Mountain

Saturday, January 17, 2026 • Blairsville, GA, Georgia

Distance 4.7 milesElevation +1364 ftDuration 3-3.5 hoursState Georgia

Blood Mountain is the highest summit on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia at 4,458 feet, and this out-and-back follows the white-blazed AT from Neels Gap straight to the top. The terrain starts smooth and turns rocky and technical as you climb, with several peaceful spots to stop and take in the views. Near the summit you'll pass the historic stone shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Parking is available at Neels Gap.

It's a January hike, so expect cold air, possible ice, and slick rock up high — traction devices are strongly recommended, and it earns every foot of its climb. Not one for first-timers in winter conditions.

Trail Notes

  • Difficulty: Moderate · 1,364 ft elevation gain · about 3–3.5 hours out-and-back
  • What hikers say: beautiful views, well-maintained paths, and challenging terrain. Steep and rocky sections are the main challenge — sturdy footwear and an early start are the standard advice.

What to Bring

Come prepared:

  • Footwear — Hiking boots or trail running shoes with good grip. No regular sneakers.
  • Traction — Microspikes or similar for icy, rocky sections near the summit.
  • Water — At minimum 2 liters per person.
  • Snacks — Bring something for the trail. You'll earn it.
  • Pack — You should not be hiking with items in your hands. Bring a bag to carry everything.
  • Layers — January on Blood Mountain means cold and wind. Bring a warm layer and a shell.
  • Rain jacket — Weather changes fast. Umbrellas are fine but may snag on branches.
  • Extra socks — Always. Your feet will thank you.
  • Compass — If you attended the NAV class, bring yours.
  • Fully charged phone — Before you leave home.

Tell someone where you're going. Let your family or a friend know your destination and estimated return time.

If you have any health concerns, find one of the team leaders before we start. No one gets left behind — but we need to know what we're working with.
